The key to finding out how long it will take a tattoo to completely heal and NOT get ruined lies in the placement, how big it is, and how fast you naturally heal (anyone with diabetes or some other diseases can take two or three times as long to heal).
Tattoos on the extremities (hands, wrists, legs, feet, etc.) -- anywhere not close to the trunk of your body (close to your heart) or brain will take longer to heal than somewhere closer to your heart or head. Unfortunately, tattoos take forever to heal when they're on the foot. (Have you ever gotten a bruise on your foot? It usually shows up DAYS after you bumped it, rather than a few hours because your legs take a lot more time to circulate blood through).
It is imperative that you keep your tattoo uncovered for a majority of the healing process. Rubbing off the scab that forms too early usually pulls out some ink with it, and foot tattoos mean that wearing shoes would most certainly mess up the tattoo completely. I would suggest waiting until you have at least one month to devote to taking care of a new tattoo and not having to wear shoes (especially avoiding sports that require more running and movement inside a shoe than normal).
If you are hell-bent on getting a tattoo before then, you can always schedule a consultation with an artist and get the real details on what he/she thinks the best ways for getting a foot tattoo are and for the care if you absolutely have to be wearing shoes that would cover the tattoo.
Best of luck!
