I think the 1985 diesel did have a lift pump in the tank. In fact, I think all 1985 VWs had lift pumps in the tank as well as the main pump that was up front.

IDI = indirect injection = before TDI (<1998 in golf / jetta, <1997 in passat, at least in the USA) All TDIs have an in-tank electric lift pump. <P> With the IDI cars, the timing belt driven injection pump sucks from the tank. I assume you are asking because the car will not run, and someone familiar with other diesels suggested you look? -A lift pump is not usually needed, if everything else is up to snuff. -inspect, and replace: rubber fuel lines between pump and fuel filter, fuel filter and body, and fuel tank and body. -Replace fuel filter If that does not fix it, remove the line from the fuel filter (the one that goes right to the injection pump) and put it into a gas can that is clean, and has a bit of diesel in it (0.5 gal). Start the car using the fuel can as your fuel source, if it runs, the pump sucks fine and you have a clog or suction side air leak in your hoses. If it does not run in a gas can, use a primer bulb for an outboard motor. If it will not run when you push fuel into it, the pump is likely bad. Double check glow plugs and compression at this point to make sure everything else is well. Have fun!
